Being fast around the treacherous Nurburgring is a badge of honor for many car manufacturers. Crushing your previous time by 13.56 seconds, & being one of the fastest cars under $100K around the ring is truly a feat to be proud of. Earlier Chevy announced that the 2018 ZL1 1LE is now the fastest Camaro around the Nurburgring, completing the 12.9 Mile North Loop in just 7:16.04 seconds. So how did they do it, & why was it so much faster than the regular ZL1?
Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer, believes they were able to achieve the lap time due to a chassis with “adjustability unlike any vehicle in its peer group”. Basically, the suspension is highly adjustable to meet track conditions. Also, let’s not forget about another big difference, The ZL1 1LE was also running on brand new Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3R summer-only tires, which are included on the “Extreme Track Performance Package”. Good grip, handling, a great driver & power is a know formula for fast lap times.
The car was driven by Bill Wise, who is also Camaro’s ride & handling Engineer. He said “It offers total control, with the confidence that it will deliver lap after lap.” The ZL1 1LE was equiped with the Multimatic DSSV® (Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve) front & rear dampers, special front dive planes, carbon-fiber rear wing, and other things included in the Extreme Track Performance Package.
