Today, Volvo announced that it will be turning Polestar into a new, separately branded “electrified global high performance car” company. That’s right, future Polestar vehicles will no longer have the Volvo logo on them. Volvo worked together with Polestar in Motorsports since 1996, but it only acquired 100% of Polestar in July 2015.
In the press release, Volvo uses the terminology “electrified high performance cars” more than once. This separation sounds like a great way for Volvo to create enthusiast-oriented sports cars while still retaining a sensible & civilized brand. Volvo is DR. Jeckyle, Polestar is Mr. Hide. Remember in May we learned that Volvo kept its record breaking Nurburgring lap time a secret for a year? It may be hard to believe, but at one time the Volvo Polestar S60 was the fastest 4 door production car around the ring. Polestar’s CEO will be Thomas Ingenlath, Who is currently the Senior Vice President of Design at Volvo. Further information about Polestar will be released in Fall of 2017 so make sure to stay tuned for updates!
