If the bus industry is any indication, we would be inclined to say yes. Recently Daimler AG (maker of Mercedes-Benz buses) announced that it will be offering customers a variety of options that can be 3D printed & included on demand. No only will these 3D printed parts be available before purchase, they will be available as replacement parts, ensuring support & maintenance down the road. Over 780 components have already been 3D printed to date.
So what about cars? Daimler AG did not directly mention any specific plans, however we don’t think the prospect is unrealistic. There are already companies that print 3D replacement parts for cars, so it would make sense for manufacturers to offer optional parts in the same fashion.
